Wildlife Pictures

Besides birds, Shenandoah is also a good place to see other forms of wildlife -- mammals, reptiles, amphibians and insects, etc.

Black Bears are the largest mammal that you can find in the park. I do not always see them (I have probably seen them 4 or 5 times in the park in my more than 40 visits, so that is about once every 10 times), so every encounter is always exciting and thrilling. In reality, they are pretty tame animals, as long as you don't get too close, especially inbetween mother bear and cubs, you are perfectly safe.

You are almost assured to see a few White-tailed Deer on every visit. They are so numerous that they are casuing damage to the vegetation in the forests. But they are still graceful animals to behold.

Chipmunks are one of the smallest, but most active mammals in the forests.

There are many types of butterflies and moths in the park; Big Meadows is a good place to see them.
