There are many more trails just outside the park's boundary -- the Blue Ridge Parkway begins where the Skyline Drive ends at the southern tip of the park at Rockfish Gap. Occasionally I venture outside the park and hike on one of those trails.

Technically outside the park, Humpback Rock is at Mile 5.8 of the Blue Ridge Parkway. There is a restored log cabin at the trailhead and the strenuous hike to the top is rewarded with a stunning view (April 9, 2005) that rivals any in the park.

A little farther afield, the Natural Bridge of Virginia is arguably the most iconic natural structure in the state. Unfortunately, it is in private property and you have to purchase a ticket at inflated price to see it.
