Greece 2022 trip - Chania
June 6 - June 9
By bus we arrived in another colorful town of Chania. Our stay in Chania was roughly divided into three parts: first, we wandered around the old town and the harbor; second, we took a day trip to Rethymno (which can be seen on the next page; third, on the last day, we visited the Akrotiri Peninsula.

Chania has the most beautiful Venetian Harbor of all the cities we visited.

The last day (June 9) of our stay in Chania and all of Crete, we hired a car to go to the Akrotiri Peninsula which is really not far from town. We visited three monasteries on en route, the first one being the Agia Triada (Holy Trinity).

The second monestery we visited was Gouverneto, which does not allow photography. However, I struck a friendly conversation with a monk who, surprisingly, was interested in my digital photography equipment. After our chat, he said he would allow me to take a few pictures from the entrance way.

The third monastery, the Katholiko, was the most interesting. First, we had to walk down a path into a gorge and toward the Katholiko Beach. On the way we would pass a cave, Cave Arkoudospilios, or "Bear Cave".

We did not go all the way to Katholiko Beach, but on the way, I had one of the best bird encounters of the trip: a nesting Blue Rock-thrush (a new bird for me, the last of four new birds of the trip).

Our last stop on the Akrotiri Peninsula was Stavros Beach, where the Hollywood movie "Zorba the Greek" was filmed. I already had this book at home, and I read it after we got back, but it is one of the worst book I've read (see the Review page for my review of this book). Anyway, Stavros Beach itself is small but sparklingly beautiful.
