Wildlife (non-bird) of Southwest Florida

Birds are not the only type of wildlife in Florida; there are in fact a huge variety of different species found in different habitats.

Dolphins -- I believe these are the dorsal fins of Atlantic Bottlenose and Spotted Dolphins (third picture, on the right).

Nine-armed Sea Stars are found on the beach in Naples.

A pretty crab (I don't know what species it is).

One day during my walk on the beach I was surprised to see a Gopher Tortoise, a keystone species in the coastal habitat.

Ghost crabs dig burrows on the beach, but they are very jittery and difficult to approach.

This tiny Green Tree Frog was found in Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary.

There were a few very bold racoons at Corkscrew Swamp Sanctuary feeding in broad daylight under the boardwalk, totally oblivious of people.

Finally, not wildlife, but the famed Corkscrew Ghost Orchids, a rare and endangered flower that was blooming out of season. How lucky were we!
