Other pictures from San Francisco and Monterey
More and more my interest has shifted from landscape, cityscape, etc. toward wildlife, especially birds. But I did take some pictures other than wildlife on this trip. These are shown here on this page. (Click on each image to see the high-resolution version)
I never quite understood Americans' infatuation with Alcatraz. Ok, I understand the reasons -- the prison for high-profile criminals on an island in the center of a bay next to a famous city, and the story is undoubtedly magnified by Hollywood's dramatization. But I don't understand the degree to which they are so obsessed with it. But I took some obligatory pictures of it anyhow ...
A walk toward Little Italy and Chinatown takes us past a playground with the St. Peter and Paul Cathedral in the background.
San Francisco's quaint row houses.
Some scenes in Little Italy and downtown San Francisco.
A vendor in the Ferry Building (Pier 1 on the Embarcadero).
One of San Francisco's many street cars, each of which is unique in color and design.
Fisherman's Wharf, where Pier 39 Sea Lions is the most famous attraction.
"Naked Ladies" a type of lily found blooming near the beach on our way to Monterey.
Pigeon Point Lighthouse, unfortunately, it was very cloudy when we were there.
Finally, Monterey, we arrived on a sunny and pleasant day.
The man himself, John Steinbeck, or rather his statute. Steinbeck was born in nearby Salinas and immortalized Monterey in his books such as Cannery Row.
One of the main attractions in Monterey is the aquarium. I have been to many aquariums (aquaria?), and I have been to Monterey several times, but this was the first time I visited this famous aquarium. I can say definitively that it is the best, most state-of-the-art aquarium I have ever been too. The setting is perfect -- it overlooks the open Monterey Bay and in some places the outside and inside are blended in together, and it is hard to tell which part is the bay and which part is the aquarium. The following is a shot from an observation platform at the aquarium, as you can see, it almost seems like the aquarium is extending into the Monterey Bay itself.
A sailboat in the bay.
A few shots of the exhibits in the aquarium.
I rarely take videos, but on this trip I took a few. The following are the video I took of the Pier 39 Sea Lions in San Francisco and some vidoes I took at the Monterey Bay Aquarium.
